AGEISM, THEORY OF. The American gerontologist Robert N. Butler (1927- ) proposed that people have a strong belief in the intrinsic superiority of those individuals who occupy a certain age range (typically the younger age brackets before age 60) that is accompanied, also, by discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice on the part of the believer. The theory of ageism indicates a potential societal bias - usually against old people -on the basis of age that is equivalent to traditional societal biases that are based on an individual's race, sex, or ethnicity.
