In this theory, P. Desain (1992) proposes a formalized, mathematical expectancy theory/ model of complex temporal patterns applicable to such diverse topics as clock/meter inducement, categorical rhythm perception, rhythmicity, and the similarity of temporal sequences. Desain's (de)composable theory of rhythm perception accounts for expectancy projected into the future, as well as projections into the past, and generates reinforcement of past events by new data.
