STUDENT RETENTION/ATTRITION MODEL. This model of student retention in higher education (cf., Spady, 1970) attempts to account for the factors that contribute to students' remaining in the academic setting until specified educational goals have been achieved. According to W. Spady's sociological model - that includes the constructs of social support and college satisfaction as mediating variables - social support has a direct and positive influence on college satisfaction. This hypothesis is supported by other educational psychological studies that suggest that high frequency of contact with faculty, as well as support from family members and friends, are significant predictors of college satisfaction and good indicators of student retention.
