Endoscopic diagnostic criteria

The endoscopic appearance of esophageal varices depends on their grade (see p. 86) and the degree of air insufflation. Esophageal varices usually begin in the distal esophagus and may spread into the proximal esophagus with further progression (Fig. 3.57).

Endosonography if findings are equivocal: varix, mucosal fold, hemangioma?
