Experiences of fraud and misconduct in healthcare research in Norway

Since 1994 there has been a National Committee for handling scientific dishonesty in healthcare research in Norway. A wide definition of dishonesty has been applied including "all serious deviations from accepted ethical research in proposing, performing and reporting research". Eleven alleged cases have been investigated so far, disputed authorship being the single most frequent reason for complaint. Dishonesty has been revealed in only two instances, but the Committee has undertaken several preventive efforts and has developed a coherent system for handling future cases of suspected misconduct.
