The role of research ethics committees

Do research ethics committees (RECs) have a role in the detection of misconduct in medical research? This chapter describes how research ethics committees work, suggesting how the system of rigorous ethical review can provide a culture in which it is more difficult for research misconduct to flourish. It demonstrates how research ethics committee review fits with the conclusions of the joint consensus conference on misconduct in biomedical research,1 with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines2 on good publication practice, and research governance in the NHS.3
