Safety Issues

Provided that certain precautions are taken in the handling of human cells and tissues, laboratory workers will be unlikely to become infected by contamination from the cells and tissues they are using. However, there have been notable cases where laboratory staff have suffered serious infection (and even death) from infected animal tissue [27, 28]. Accordingly, it is wise to treat all cells and tissues as potentially infectious. The means of evaluating and prioritizing this risk are described in the following sections.
