Mutagenic Risk

A dose of 0.5 -1 Gy is necessary to double the spontaneous rate of genetic mutation (Hall 1991). This level of radiation is never reached by the common radiographic diagnostic tests.

In conclusion, even if the consequences of diagnostic irradiation during pregnancy are low, particularly in the second and third trimesters, the risk-benefit ra tio of radiological exploration should always be evaluated and compared to the risk of an unrecognized urinary tract obstruction treated late (Gorton and Whit-field 1997).
