for which data has been received is known. Therefore, upon receipt of new data, the network is updated to reflect any changes in patient, staff, operating room, equipment, or supplies state.

Additionally, actions are defined for rules that have become satisfied. The rules engine is designed to work in conjunction with a physician mobile application platform that will run clinician applications and display appropriate alerts, reminders, and requests for information. The rules incorporated in such applications push them to the level of intelligent agents.

In addition, since the rules engine can store the state network of information for all patients in the perioperative process, it can detect scheduling and other issues across all patients in real time. This is achieved by checking the state of patient data extracted from underlying databases that are accessed through adapters.

Rules may be modified, extended, or included to accommodate new medical insights, hospital, or governmental policies. As a result, the rules environment can evolve with human input to maximize patient throughput, efficiency, and safety of the perioperative process.
