The coefficients must be obtained by experimental methods or by fitting the model to field measurements of the X's. The system could then be solved by standard matrix solution methods, such as Gaussian elimination. Matrix systems such as this can also be solved easily using spreadsheet software (see Table 14.4 and Problem 14.6).

The linear system described above is powerful but limited. Suppose that we tried to make it more realistic by improving the model for flux Jj, nitrate uptake by phytoplankton.
