Definition of Successful Weight Loss Maintenance

There is no universally accepted definition of successful weight loss maintenance. We recommend the following definition: an intentional weight loss of >10% of initial body weight that is maintained for >1year. Several points in this definition should be noted. First, the definition requires that the weight loss be intentional; this is important since several studies suggest that unintentional weight loss occurs frequently and may likely have different causes and consequences than intentional weight loss. Second, criteria for both magnitude and duration of the weight loss are set. The criterion of 10% weight loss is recommended since weight losses of this magnitude have been shown to have positive health consequence. The 1-year duration is selected in keeping with the US Institute of Medicine definition. However, examining both 1-year and 5-year maintenance of weight loss is suggested.
