Gastrointestinal Hormones

The gastrointestinal hormones are a group of pep-tide molecules that increase in number every year.

Most are extremely potent biological agents exerting their action at some distance from the site of secretion (endocrine) or close to the site of release (para-crine). The hormones are secreted in granules from entero-endocrine cells within the gastrointestinal mucosa in response to nutrient signals from the lumen. The precise physiologies of most of these molecules are still being clarified and the following review is restricted to those peptides on which there is broad agreement (Table 3).
