Glycosylated Hemoglobin

Glycohemoglobin is formed when a ketoamine reaction occurs between glucose and the N-terminal amino acid of the fi chain of hemoglobin. The amount of glycohemoglobin generated is proportional to the mean blood glucose during the 8-10 weeks before the test. Thus, the glycohemoglo-bin level is a useful indicator of long-term blood glucose control. This is not a useful test for diagnosing diabetes, however, since the normal range is broad, the test is not well standardized between laboratories, and it can be affected by conditions that alter the life span of the red blood cell.
