During pregnancy there is an increased demand for nutrients for maternal metabolism and growth of fetal and maternal tissues. Nutritional goals during pregnancy include consumption of a high-quality, micronutrient-dense diet and the avoidance of, or a reduction in, intake of substances that are potentially harmful to the fetus or pregnant woman.
