During pregnancy there is an increased demand for nutrients for maternal metabolism and growth of fetal and maternal tissues. Nutritional goals during pregnancy include consumption of a high-quality, micronutrient-dense diet and the avoidance of, or a reduction in, intake of substances that are potentially harmful to the fetus or pregnant woman. The majority of additional nutrients required for pregnancy can be obtained by appropriate selection of foods.
