Monitoring Nutritional Status

The nutritional status and growth of the preterm infant should be monitored throughout the hospita-lization. The daily fluid and caloric intake should be monitored daily, body weight should be recorded daily, length and head circumference should be measured weekly, and all three measurements plotted on standardized growth charts. If growth is inadequate the volume or caloric density of feeds and or the protein content should be increased. Biochemical measurements should also be assessed periodically.
