Most of the developed world is in the midst of an obesity epidemic. In the United States, more than 60% of adults are overweight and obese. The negative impact of obesity on health outcomes and health care costs has heightened awareness of the importance of achieving successful weight loss maintenance. This article reviews information obtained from observational and experimental studies on successful weight loss maintenance. First, the definition and prevalence of successful weight loss maintenance are presented, and why weight loss maintenance may be difficult is discussed. Next, factors identified in research examining weight loss maintenance, obtained from the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) in the United States and from randomized controlled trials examining long-term weight loss and weight loss maintenance, are described. Finally, general recommendations for achieving successful weight loss maintenance are provided.
